Created in 2017 by Changpeng Zhao (also known as "CZ"), the Chinese-Canadian entrepreneur behind the Binance exchange, BNB is the token for the BNB Chain blockchain. Originally intended as an internal token for Binance exchange users to gain various benefits such as lower fees, it quickly developed into an independent cryptocurrency on its own blockchain. The technology is largely based on the same foundations as Ethereum and makes use of the standards and security updates that Ethereum has implemented.

Today, BNB is among the largest cryptocurrencies in the world by market value, and its general usage has increased significantly in recent years.

Changpeng Zhao (CZ)

Changpeng Zhao is the man behind the Binance exchange, who, at a young age, sold his apartment for Bitcoin and in 2017 founded the Binance exchange, which has grown to become the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange.

CZ has not been without controversy, and in 2023 he was convicted in U.S. courts and sentenced to prison for violations of banking laws. CZ was sentenced to four months in prison and ordered to pay 50 million U.S. dollars for his offenses.

However, this has not prevented Binance from remaining the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world, and CZ is still undeniably one of the most influential and wealthiest individuals in the crypto industry.
